Achievement Night Canceled- Awards List

After much consideration, we have decided to cancel the Achievement Night scheduled for Saturday, November 5th due to little attendance expected.  After much discussion regarding rescheduling, the decision has been made not to reschedule due to the upcoming holidays and availability of facilities.  We feel it is best to move forward into the new year.  However, it is important for youth and volunteers to be recognized for their efforts this year, so a list has been placed online at http://extension.psu.edu/clinton/programs/4-h/members.  Be sure to take a look at the document since many are being recognized for participation in various events along with some major awards.  We do encourage clubs to recognize their members at their next meeting and awards and gifts can be picked up at the Extension Office between November 7th and December 22nd

Project books may also be picked up during this time.  Leaders may obtain books for their members, but will be asked to sign for the books they take so that we can be sure none are lost.

This cancellation is unfortunate, but you can be assured that we will be planning to continue the event next year.  Thank you to all volunteers for your hard work and congratulations to all 4-H Members on a successful year!

Mini Round Up News Article

Poise, eye-contact and charm wowed the judges as they were put to the challenge of scoring and placing nine courageous 4-H members who participated in the 4-H Mini Round Up on Thursday, June 30th at 6pm in the Learning Center at the Education and Resource Center in Mill Hall. Those participating 4-H members grabbed the competition by the horns and showed off their public speaking abilities.
Threeand six junior 4-H members shared their speeches and presentations to a panel of judges who placed them according to how well they presented their topic. Criteria included not only subject matter, but also appearance, grammar and vocabulary, demonstration equipment and accuracy. The topics that the participators presented were chosen relative to their own particular interests. Proud parents and friends looked on from their seats cheering the nerves away from the young 4-H’ers as they concluded their presentations.
In the senior level, Alexis Lingenfelter took first with her presentation on the W.A.A.C’s during WWII. Lingenfelter was closely followed by Destiny Stover. Keri Ford took first place in the Senior Speech competition.  Kayla Kimble stole the first place prize in the Junior Division with her presentation entitled, “Before You Ride… Brush Their Hide,” which showcased the steps and importance of horse grooming. Ford was also closely followed by her competition, Morgan Kerstetter, Olivia Benna, Allison Benna, Blaze Bierly and Tanner Bierly.
The heated competition was cooled down with an ice cream social at the end. The 4-H participants chatted and “horsed” around with their competition, family and friends while enjoying their make-it-yourself sundaes. So, if you ask me, with an ice cream sundae, everyone won.

July 2011 Clover Patch

The July Newsletter can be found at http://extension.psu.edu/clinton/programs/4-h/members/newsletters/july-2011-clover-patch/view.

Successful Regional 4-H Camp Creates Memories to Last a Lifetime

The only real training for leadership is leadership. “Take the Lead” was the theme at this year’s Regional 4-H Camp.  Camp Kanesatake in Spruce Creek was buzzing with 4-H members from eight different counties across central Pennsylvania from June 19th until the 23rd.
The camp theme of “Take the Lead,” allowed the campers to be exposed to different leadership roles including workshops that promoted responsibility, self-help, self-esteem, public speaking and how to lead instead of boss. Those who participated, not only experienced workshops which helped to prepare them for leadership roles, but also were given the opportunities to ride on a zipline, swim in the enormous pool, join in sport and recreational games, partake in art and craft activities, enjoy campfires, catch fish, see local wildlife and attend a dance! Campers also had a blast, goofing around as Denny Huber, Balloon Artist and Magician, showed off his talents.
Clinton County had thirty traditional campers and seven mini-campers participate. Mini-Camp, an overnight experience for eight and nine year olds, took place on Sunday, June 19th, until Monday afternoon. Traditional-Camp, a four-day, three-night experience for 4-H’ers ages nine to fourteen, took place from Monday, June 20th until the evening of Thursday, June 23rd. A half-price scholarship was graciously presented to those children who participated from Clinton County through a grant from the Community Foundation.
4-H camp is made possible by Penn State Extension as a time for 4-H members to not only relax and create summer memories that will last a lifetime, but also learn skills that will benefit them and their communities. Thirty-two teenaged volunteer councilors and eighteen adult staff, both extension employees and 4-H volunteers, helped to make this year’s 4-H camp a successful event for the young 4-H members to enjoy.

Important Notice for Poultry Exibitors

We have just been informed by the Pennsylvania Animal Diagnostic laboratory that there will be a charge for some of the testing of poultry.    The majority of the testing fees are being absorbed by a grant – but each bird tested will be charged the following rates:

AI AGID – (done on all exhibition birds except waterfowl) - $0.55 per sample
AI VI – (done on waterfowl)- $15.00 per swab pool of up to 5 birds (birds must be pooled by species, i.e. ducks and geese must be tested separately)
Pullorum – (done on all exhibition birds except waterfowl) – $0.50 per sample

So, for chickens & turkeys – the fee is $1.05 per bird that they are showing (this is the total for AI and pullorum testing).

For ducks and geese, the fee is $15 per tube of swabs, and you can submit between 1 – 5 swabs per tube.  Unfortunately, this is a significantly more expensive test than the testing required for the other birds, but the less expensive AI tests do not work for waterfowl.

Payment for these fees must be remitted at the time of testing.   As a reminder, testing will be conducted at the Small Animal Barn at the Clinton County Fairgrounds on Friday, July 1 from 12:00 noon to 8:00 pm and again on Saturday, July 2 from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon.   You will need to bring exact change or a check payable to Animal Diagnostic Laboratory.

For those showing ducks – I’m not certain how we can fairly do this – each tube submitted will be charged $15 (and can contain testing of two pairs) – the fee can be split between the two entries – however, if there is only one pair the entire $15 would need to be charged.    I believe we are aware of only three pairs that will be entered – so the “fair” thing to do would be to expect that we will need to submit two tubes – for a total of $30 – and the split would be $10 per each pair of ducks.

I apologize for the delay in getting you this information – our original interpretation of the communication indicated that the fees would be completely subsidized by the grant – but we just received information that this interpretation was incorrect.

If anyone has questions, please contact me at 570-726-7675.  Thank you.

Quality Assurance and Ethics Clarification

Good afternoon,

I have been hearing some confusion among the 4-H community regarding the new Quality Assurance guidelines.  So, I thought I would send a note to clarify.

1.       This year ALL 4-H members taking ANY type of animal project needs to complete a Quality Assurance Training.  This includes, dairy, livestock, horse, small animals, pets or anything else dealing with animals.
2.      Registration for this training MUST be done through e-data in order to be counted.
3.      Participants active in multiple counties only have to complete the training once, but both counties should be notified.
4.      Those showing pigs at Farm Show need to attend a training with Becky Sellers or Wayne Bechdel in order to receive PQA training.

Currently, the March 22nd training is full.  So, e-data will not allow anyone else to register.  This is set to a 40 person limit and we will not be accepting additional registrants for that date due to the interactive nature of the training.  So, please only plan to attend if you are registered and if you are already registered and not coming, please “un-register” so that other people may.

Please contact me with any questions or concerns.

4-H, A Positive Youth Opportunity

4-H is a long standing tradition in both Clinton County and the entire Nation.  The National 4-H Organization is now serving over 6 million youth from all walks of life.  It is no longer an organization for “farm kids”, but an opportunity for youth of any background to engage in hands-on learning experiences.  4-H has a wide variety of projects and experiences that allows youth to develop life skills they will use into adulthood.
The Clinton County 4-H program currently has 177 members and is still building its membership for 2011.  New members are enrolling all the time to get a taste of the action.  While new members, ages 8-18, are always accepted into the program, they must be enrolled by May 1, 2011 to participate in the 4-H Round Up in August.  An Open House will be held at the Ross Library in Lock Haven for those interested in learning more about the local 4-H program.  The event will be held on March 15, 2011 from 6pm to 8pm.  It is open to the public and will have a wide variety of activities for youth.  Those interested may also contact the Penn State Cooperative Extension Office at any time.  (570) 726-0022.
The 4-H program focuses on hands-on learning, community service, leadership development and healthy choices all with life skills development in mind.  The Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development did a longitudinal study at Tufts University to determine the impact of 4-H on youth.  This study concluded that members involved in 4-H were two times more likely to get good grades in school and plan to go to college.  They are 41% less likely to engage in risky behaviors and 25% more likely to positively contribute to their families and communities.  All of these results show that 4-H has a very positive impact on our local community.
Positive relationships with caring adults are a large part of the success the 4-H program has in providing a positive youth program.  Nation-wide, 4-H is supported by 3,500 Professionals and 540,000 Volunteers.  Over 50 of those volunteers are involved with the Clinton County 4-H program.  Without this adult support, the opportunities for youth would not exist.  We are always in search of good volunteers to be a part of the program.  Those interested may also use the contact information above to learn more about volunteering in the 4-H program.
