Wet Fall Weather Has Caused Rain Rot in Horses
Pennsylvania has had a very wet October, and owners of horses kept in wet, humid areas have reported seeing rain rot or “dermatophilosis.” Rain rot or rain scald, is caused by bacteria and often is mistaken for a fungal disease. The bacteria live in the outer layer of skin and cause pinpoint to large, crusty scabs to form.

Be Careful, Do Not Toss Yard Waste Over Pasture Fences!
Horse owners may not be aware that various yard waste “trimmings” can be toxic to horses and other livestock. In urban areas, neighboring homeowners toss yard vegetative plants over the fence, not realizing these can be deadly when consumed by horses. It is always a good idea to establish a good acquaintance with your neighbors and educate them to the toxic affect yard waste may have on horses and other livestock.

Fall Leaves In Horse Pastures
Dispose of Fall leaves properly or compost in an area outside of the horse’s pasture. Horses like the taste and smell of recently fallen leaves. However, the leaves are dense and can compact in the horse’s digestive system and cause compaction colic.

Manure Management Requirements for Horse Farms Are Changing!
Any farm that houses animals in the state of Pennsylvania will have to have a written Manure Management Plan, meeting the guidelines provided in the PA Department of Environmental Protection’s Manure Management Manual. The plan simply needs to be kept on file at the farm and doesn’t need to be approved, unless the farm is a Concentrated Animal Operation or Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation.

Re-enrolling in 4-H

Good Afternoon,

Since October 1st marked the start of the new 4-H year, it is also time that you can re-enroll for 4-H as well.   This year, re-enrolling should be fast and easy.  Just follow the steps below.

1.     First you will need your username and password you previously created.  If you have forgotten this, call me for instructions.  Please DO NOT create a new account if you already had one last year.
2.     Go to http://extension.psu.edu/edata and click “Log In”.
3.      Enter your username and password.
4.     Once you come to your home screen, click “Carry- Over”.
5.     The system will prompt you to correct any information you may not already have entered and will ask you to confirm that your information is correct.
6.     Don’t forget to update any phone numbers, addresses or email addresses that may have changed.
7.     Then, you should be re-enrolled and your Key/Organizational Leader will need to approve you as a member of their club.

After submitting the information on E-data, the only thing left to do is pay your membership fee of $15 and submit a Parental Permissions Form.  This form can be obtained through your 4-H Key/Organizational Leader or the Extension Office.   You can also find it at http://clinton.extension.psu.edu/4hblogfiles/ParentalPermission.pdfMembers taking horse projects will have an additional $25 to pay.  All the information MUST be turned into the Extension Office no later than January 31st, 2011.

Announcement for Horse Members

We have a few new members this year in 4-H that are not aware of the activities that go on at the State horse show complex October 28th -31st. Anyone can help in the decoration and hospitality livestock, textiles, teen, not just horse members. concider this you invatation to get involved. This is a good opportunity for the 4-H member that missed qualifying to get involved and show their county support. The Good house keeping / Hospitality contest is a state level contest and is a county wide activity.
As qualifying members arrive to the farm show complex and get their animals settled the stall decorations will be started as members find time to between practice sessions in the arenas. Help with this display is needed and appreciated, not to mention fun.
The first available time for anyone to get into the Farm show building is 11a.m. Decoration can be started any time after 11 a.m.
Amy will have the curtains and supplies ready at 11 a.m. for anyone to begin. The plan for the decorations is fairly straight forward little direction will be needed for installation.

The State horse show stall decorating committee has had its last meeting on Tuesday October 5th.  The members worked very hard on their decoration and did a very good job. This was a very ambitious undertaking.
You have all worked hared to get to this event and made your leaders  and parents very proud. It is my wish that everyone have a great time at the Farm show complex and remember to check out the other activities like Model horse show and the Dance and to see the educational displays and activities (clinics).
Respectfully submitted,
Amy Rankinen

Dislpay details to follow:
The end display is a painted mural keeping with the Trail of painted ponies theme. A semi-free standing tree with a sap bucket to hold the hospitality candy. Paper leaves with the qualifying members /equine photos were laminated  will also be placed on the end display.

Countywide Can Drive Results

Dear 4-H Members,

Earlier in the year, the Teen Leader Council challenged all the Clinton County clubs to collect as many aluminum cans as possible.  It was slow going at first, but after a month or so, everyone heard of the challenge and started participating.  The profits from this challenge were intended to go to the Children's Miracle Network, and a prize will be awarded to the winner.  The challenge ended October 6 and the results are in.

In first place: Sugar Valley with 28 lbs. of cans
Second: Bits and Spurs
The other clubs that participated were Just for Kicks and Susquehanna Hay Balers.
Our profit was a whopping $36.48!! (Sarcasm involved here)
I am sure that many members forgot to bring their cans.  Keep saving for next time!  It is very likely we will do this again in the near future.
Thank you for all the clubs who participated!

Sincerely,
Joseph Rankinen
